Alternative Site

Not only does the SMAC have probably the best primary flying site in the Country but it also has an excellent alternative flying site as well.
Wroughton Airfield is owned by the Science Museum in London. During the year the Science Museum rent the site out for Corporate Events and also hold their own Open Days during the year. Several of these events are supported by the SMAC by providing an additional attraction of a static and / or model flying displays. During the year several days are lost to the SMAC due to the above mentioned events. To this end the SMAC have acquired an Alternative Site that is located on the adjacent field from our Primary Site.

The 100 acre Alternative Flying Site

Engine Capacity
To ensure we keep within the regulated noise limits also enforced by the planning regulations the maximum engine capacity is 10cc. That equates to a .61 two stroke or .90 four stroke.

All IC models to be flown there must have a current Noise Test Certificate

It is imperative our members comply with the above regulations This will guarantee our future use and enjoyment of flying on such a magnificent site.

The flying field is on a 100 acre grass field. The landing strip is 40,000 square feet of good quality grass. The flying site is maintained by the SMAC to a very high standard. Car parking is available at the top of the lane. Although the site is cleared to fly Model Aircraft, the use of ducted fan / gas turbine and large scale models is strictly prohibited. However there is something about flying off a grass strip, surrounded by beautiful Cotswold countryside that always makes this a great place to fly.
Permission from the committee MUST be sought before using this site
